As you may already be aware, African Adventures is a Signatory to the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), which aligns our work to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
In a previous segment of our blog, we discussed how we are working to action the SDGs at our partner projects. As a Signatory to the UNGC, we have also committed to providing an annual report which reaffirms our commitment to the 10 Principles of the UN Global Compact, and details how we are working to advance the SDGs as a company.
After months of hard work, we are delighted to be able to share this report with our supporters and volunteers.
So, what’s included?
Our Communication on Progress Report includes examples of how we are working to advance the SDGs and the 10 Principles, both at our partner projects and through our operations as a company.
The report begins with African Adventures’ story, detailing how the company first started, our mission, and how we have grown over the past 10 years. Here, you can find out how African Adventures came to be, what we have achieved so far, and our plans for the future.
The African Adventures Family
We wouldn’t be where we are today without our African Adventures family. We now employ over 30 members of staff in four countries. In peak times, we employ nearly 50 staff across Ghana, Kenya and Zanzibar. In this section, we look at some of the people who we are lucky enough to work with in each of our destinations and find out more about their stories, backgrounds, and motivations.
This part of the report also provides an insight into the way we work in each of our host destinations. From employing local people to working in partnership with our community-based projects, here you’ll find out just why they are our ‘partner’ projects.
You can also find out how we support the children who attend our partner projects, and the impact that our projects have on the disadvantaged children they support, by reading a case study of an ex-student from The Walk Centre, our ‘flagship’ partner project.
This section details the ‘nitty-gritty’ (for lack of a better term!) of our volunteer programme – from volunteer numbers, to the mutually beneficial nature of our trips, to the work we’ve committed to doing in order to help advance the SDGs.
In this section, we discuss the policies we have introduced to mitigate our environmental impact. Here, you can learn about our approach to reducing single-use plastic, the lessons we have learnt, and our hopes and plans for the future to ensure we protect the environment as much as we can.
We finish our COP Report by detailing our plans and goals for 2020 – we have some big initiatives planned, and we are excited to share them with you!
This section also contains further detail on the 17 SDGs, and the 10 Principles of the UNGC, and can be used as a reference throughout the report.
We hope you find our Communication on Progress Report interesting, engaging, and enlightening. You can read the report here.
