Uddingston students embark on Zanzibar expedition!

Dan Mew

This weekend students from Uddingston Grammar School are getting very excited as they make their final preparations for a school expedition of a lifetime next week. The group will be embarking on an adventure to Zanzibar where they will be staying in historic Stone Town and volunteering at Kijito Upele School. Samson, our In-Country Director, is very much looking forward to greeting our volunteers and welcoming them to the beautiful Island, his home town.

Individuals Zanzibar - Kijito Upele School class with teacher

Kijito Upele School is one of African Adventures newest partnerships and is a project which currently educates approximately 6,000 students. As you can see in the photos, the classes are incredibly overcrowded with a lack of desks and chairs for the children to work from. To be able to manage the large class numbers, the school currently runs split timetables each day, with half of the students attending class from 7am until 12 noon and the other half attending between 12 and 5 pm. With the help of our Uddingston volunteers beginning the construction work next week, we will be building a new classroom to create a better learning environment for the children and enable space for classroom furniture to be put in place. We look forward to sharing the new renovations with you very soon!

It is without doubt that our Uddingston volunteers are going to have a very enjoyable and rewarding experience in Zanzibar and will learn a lot about Zanzibari culture during their trip. Along with constructing a new classroom, the group with also have the opportunity to deliver various different lessons including PE sessions, which currently go untaught at the school due to a lack of resources. We look forward to seeing them working hard as a team and creating many wonderful memories.

We wish you all the best of luck Uddingston Grammar School and a happy African Adventure!
