1. It’s beautiful!
Zanzibar is a charming archipelago of islands off Tanzania’s eastern coast. An increasingly popular tropical paradise, yet still far enough off the beaten track for adventure travellers to find those hidden treasures and relax on the unspoilt white sandy beaches. An Ocean Safari is a must if you wish to discover the diverse marine life here!
2. It’s culturally rich!
Zanzibar’s cultural heritage is abundant; historic Stone Town (Zanzibar’s main city, also known as Mji Mkongwe in Swahili), is a traditional coastal trading town and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Zanzibar has influences from across the Indian Ocean, Arabia and Europe and is renowned for its bustling fish markets and spices. You can see, taste and smell them during a famous spice tour.
3. Plentiful responsible volunteering programmes
Be a responsible volunteer by joining a programme with a company that really cares about making a difference and contributing to sustainable development in local communities. Travellers are most welcome to Zanzibar to offer their time and support. Although Zanzibar has a thriving tourism industry, creating opportunities for Zanzibari people, it is still developing and many of Zanzibar’s people are faced with poverty. This translates into the education system where, if you volunteer at school projects, you will find that a huge challenge for many of the schools is that they are severely overcrowded and under-resourced due to lack of facilities for the vast number of children.
African Adventures has a partnership with two primary schools in Zanzibar which in total accommodate 10,000 children and there is an ongoing need for volunteers to assist with teaching and sports coaching as well as building and renovation work.
4. Learn about yourself
Joining a volunteer programme in Zanzibar provides you with an opportunity to be part of a life-changing experience that will not only challenge you and take you out of your comfort zone but will help you to grow as a person, gain confidence in doing new things and put you in the company of like-minded people with whom you will hopefully build everlasting friendships.
5. Gain a whole new perspective
Zanzibar invites you to open your mind to a different pace of life and a variety of cultures and languages. Learning a few phrases of Swahili will be really valuable to help you on your way in Zanzibar and help you to interact with the Zanzibari people. This experience will allow you to develop your knowledge and positively enhance your perspective of the world around you. So, what are you waiting for? It’s time to explore!
