Landau Forte Academy

Landau Forte Academy’s 2021 trip to Kenya

Information evening: 6pm on Wednesday 15th January at the school

Introduction

African Adventures has teamed up with Landau Forte Academy to offer its students a unique opportunity to volunteer at our partner projects in Kenya, and you are invited to join!

African Adventures is a social enterprise dedicated to improving lives in the UK and Africa. We work with 25 community educational projects in developing areas of Ghana, Kenya and Zanzibar, impacting the lives of the 20,000 children who attend. We provide volunteers and financial support to assist with the projects’ development, which is furthered through our charity, African Adventures Foundation.

Volunteers can help teach in classrooms, coach sports, and build new classrooms, kitchens and other key infrastructure projects that will enhance the learning environment.

Back home, we work with schools, colleges, football clubs and charities across the UK to recruit volunteers to help deliver the support we commit to providing. It’s our job to provide them with all the support and preparation they need to make a difference at our partner projects and come away with a life-changing experience that will stay with them forever.

Students: Why Get Involved

We provide students like you with a unique opportunity to volunteer in Africa and there are two simple reasons to grab this opportunity with both hands.

The first is to help others. Whilst many economies in Africa are growing much quicker than those in richer countries, not everybody is seeing the benefits. The children we support live in poor communities and do not have the start in life they deserve. The schools we work with focus on providing an education to those otherwise unable to have one. You can help teach in classrooms, build new ones or help deliver sports coaching sessions.

The second reason to is to help yourself. There’s a huge world out there waiting to be explored and here’s a chance to see another part of it alongside like-minded students from your school. You’ll pick up lots of new skills along the way and come back a more knowledgeable individual with an outstanding experience to add to your CV (and your UCAS application!).

So, the question is less ‘why should you go?’ and more ‘why wouldn’t you go?’.

Volunteer Roles

Students can choose from two volunteer roles whilst volunteering on your trip:

Teaching & Multi-Sports

Supporting children’s education is at the heart of this role. Activities include: assisting teachers with lessons for children aged 3-17, reading stories, preparing meals, playing games and sports, and general interaction. The enthusiasm from children, who are so eager to learn, makes this role so rewarding.

Building & Renovation

With overcrowding an issue at the projects, improved facilities are needed to accommodate growing numbers and create more learning spaces. Tasks include painting, moulding bricks, and assisting with the build of school facilities. Clear progress makes this challenging and rewarding role so worthwhile.

Fundraising Support

African Adventures volunteers across the country run fun, exciting fundraising events to help raise the money they need to travel. In fact, in 2018, 41% of volunteers surveyed told us that they raised between 75-100% of their entire trip costs.

Furthermore, students who have fundraised, saved or worked their way to help cover at least part of their trip costs usually enjoy and appreciate the experience more than those who just take their seat on the plane.

The best approach we suggest for fundraising is to break the total trip cost down into monthly targets, so students can focus on smaller, more manageable amounts. Then,  split this down into three ways to save/raise funds – individual events (with your friends, family, or clubs you attend), group events (that you and other volunteers on your trip can organise together) and personal savings (part-time work, Christmas/birthday monetary gifts, pocket money etc.).

There is some great online support provided to help you reach your fundraising target – just take a look at our Fundraising Tools on My AA.

FAQs

In a word, yes! Of course, there are risks with any form of travel, whether you’re going to Los Angeles, Lima or London but hundreds of thousands of Britons to travel to Africa every year and most visits are trouble free.

At African Adventures, we have organised trips for over 5,000 volunteers and hold a wealth of experience. From pre-departure support and in-country orientations to knowing nearby hospitals and medical centres, we know how to deliver a safe experience. We are accredited by reputable travel bodies (see Trusted and Experienced) and we follow Foreign & Commonwealth (FCO) advice at all times; www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice.

No, but the most rewarding experiences rarely are! You are likely to be stepping out of your comfort zone, meeting new people, travelling to a new country, in a different environment and with a different culture.

This will be an exciting challenge for you but you will have plenty of support whilst you are away. Our trained Trip Leaders and Trip Hosts will be there to look after you and your fellow volunteers.

The group will stay in a basic hotel with single-sex, shared rooms for the duration of the trip.

All accommodations have showers, flushing toilets and lockable rooms.

Further information (including pictures) is available on My African Adventure, our online portal accessible once you have signed up.

If you’ve not been to this part of the world before, you’ll need some vaccinations before you go.

Please visit your local GP or travel nurse for advice regarding which vaccinations you need. You can also visit www.travelhealthpro.org.uk or www.fitfortravel.nhs.uk for helpful information relating to each of our volunteering destinations.

The good news is that most vaccinations needed are available on the NHS. However, you will need to pay for the Yellow Fever vaccination and antimalarial tablets. More information is available on the My African Adventure portal.

Plenty! All our volunteers have access to My African Adventure, our online portal that contains a wealth of information relating to fundraising, the country you’re going to and everything you need to get ready. And, if you can’t find the information you’re looking for, our team are happy to help – just take a look at the bottom of this page to see the two friendly faces organising the trip.

Some schools also run group fundraising events in the lead up to the trip, so help spread the load. Please discuss possible opportunities with the teacher leading the trip in school.

Once students are up and running, the fundraising journey can be almost as fun as the trip itself.

Sometimes it can be difficult, particularly if one of their early events doesn’t go to plan but if they stay positive, and take advantage of the support available to through African Adventures and the school, the chances are your child will reach their total.

If you decide for any reason that you no longer want your child to go, you can cancel their place at any time. Please be aware that the deposit is non-refundable and there are incremental cancellation fees that start from 150 days prior to departure.

No; African Adventures is a social enterprise. Our volunteers carry out fundraising to cover their trip costs – this is an important part of the African Adventures experience. The money that volunteers raise funds all aspects of their trip, such as flights, accommodation and adventure activities. As this money is not raised for a charity, volunteers should use crowdfunding webpages (eg fundmytravel), rather than charity pages, such as Just Giving or Virgin Money Giving.

We do, however, also have a charity arm called African Adventures Foundation and some volunteers choose to fundraise for our charity on their return from Africa. Because African Adventures Ltd covers any associated costs, African Adventures Foundation is able to ensure that 100% of the money donated is sent to where it is needed most, meaning that real impact can be made.
