BACT’s 2020 trip to Ghana

Burton Albion Community Trust (BACT) is a registered charity and an award-winning organisation. BACT aims to ‘make a difference to our communities through the power of sport and the brand of Burton Albion.’ We deliver this through our Five Scopes of Work: Health & Wellbeing, Education & Learning, School Sport, Football Development, and Inclusive Sport.

We have four strategic aims which are to: Deliver High Quality, Create a Positive Journey, Measure & Evidence Our Impact, and Govern & Lead Effectively.

We engage with over 8,000 people per week with a commitment to ensure all members of our community are serviced in some way by BACT.

BACT is open to the whole community and is totally inclusive. We cater for people of any age, background, sexuality, and ethnicity. Our youngest participant is 24 months old, and our oldest participant is over 90 years old. BACT engages with all communities and has a proven track record with delivering programmes in deprived and hard to reach areas.

We pride ourselves in creating pathways for individuals from a young age, such as volunteering opportunities, apprenticeships, foundation degrees, and work placements, as well as building skills to provide opportunities to become better people.

About African Adventures

African Adventures is a social enterprise which specialises in educational trips and is dedicated to improving lives in the UK and Africa. We are partnered with 25 community educational projects in developing areas of Ghana, Kenya and Zanzibar, impacting the lives of the 20,000 children that attend. We provide humanitarian and financial support to assist with the projects’ development, which is furthered through our charity, African Adventures Foundation.

African Adventures is a Signatory to the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), which aligns our work to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Sustainable Development Goals are a call for action by all countries – poor, rich and middle-income – to promote prosperity while protecting the planet. They recognise that ending poverty must go hand in hand with strategies that build economic growth and address a range of social needs including education, health, social protection, and job opportunities, while tackling climate change and environmental protection.

Why Get Involved

African Adventures needs volunteers like you to carry out the work we have committed to do at our partner projects.

Our trips provide a unique opportunity to meet like-minded people and learn about a new culture whilst improving the services our partner projects offer to their local community.

Whilst most volunteers’ primary motivation for travelling with us is to make a difference at our partner projects, the most common underestimation is how much they will take away from the experience, which results in a uniquely balanced exchange of value and makes the trip so worthwhile.

Volunteers consistently tell us that their experience has given them a new outlook on the world and their place in it.

Volunteer Roles

You can choose from two volunteer roles whilst volunteering on your trip:

Teaching & Multi-Sports

Project Impact

Supporting children’s education is at the heart of this role. Activities include: assisting teachers with lessons for children aged 3-17, reading stories, preparing meals, playing games and sports, and general interaction. The enthusiasm from children, who are so eager to learn, makes this role so rewarding.

Building & Renovation

With overcrowding an issue at the projects, improved facilities are needed to accommodate growing numbers and create more learning spaces. Tasks include painting, moulding bricks, and assisting with the build of school facilities. Clear progress makes this challenging and energetic role so worthwhile.

About Ghana

Where you will volunteer

  • Tropical climate – hot and humid with temperatures between 28-32°C.
  • Full of true West African culture; drumming, dancing, colour and different foods
  • Based in Woe – a rural, traditional African village on the south-east coast
  • Perfect if you are looking to get away from everything Western

Where you will stay

  • Accommodation at the volunteer house and nearby guest houses
  • En-suite rooms that sleep 2-5
  • Basic Western amenities (UK plug sockets)
  • Running water and electricity (prepare for power cuts and no water!)
  • Meals brought to you

Fundraising Support

Fundraising can be a great way to help you raise your trip costs, and it can actually be a lot of fun, too! Interestingly, 41% of volunteers surveyed in summer 2018 raised between 75-100% of the money they needed, which is a fantastic achievement.

The process of fundraising can actually be a valuable process in itself – many of our volunteers tell us that this aspect of the experience was great in terms of learning new skills and getting to know the others within their group. We have years of experience and dozens of ways to help, so always feel free to ask us for support. From fun events to earning money just by shopping online, we can help you reach your target.

We pride ourselves on our personalised and friendly approach, and we want to be there to support you at every stage of the adventure. Our fantastic online facility, My African Adventure, contains a wealth of information relating to fundraising, your chosen volunteer destination, and how to best prepare for your trip. And, if you cannot find the information that you are looking for, we are always at the end of the phone and email, to help you out.

If you’ve not been to this part of the world before, you’ll need some vaccinations before you go.

Please visit your local GP or travel nurse for advice regarding which vaccinations you need. You can also visit www.travelhealthpro.org.uk or www.fitfortravel.nhs.uk for helpful information relating to each of our volunteering destinations.

Most vaccinations needed are available on the NHS. However, you will need to pay for the Yellow Fever vaccination and antimalarial tablets. More information is available on the My African Adventure portal.

In a word, yes! Of course, there are risks with any form of travel, whether you’re going to Los Angeles, Lima or London but hundreds of thousands of Britons travel to Africa every year and the majority of visits are trouble free.

At African Adventures, we have organised trips for over 5,000 volunteers and hold a wealth of experience. From pre-departure support and in-country orientations to knowing nearby hospitals and medical centres, we know how to deliver a safe and exciting experience. We are accredited by reputable travel bodies (see Trusted and Experienced) and we follow Foreign & Commonwealth (FCO) advice at all times; www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice.

Previous experience has demonstrated that, with the right commitment, enthusiasm, planning and organisation, it is possible to raise the entirety, or a large portion, of the trip funds. We will be available to support you throughout the fundraising stage, with ideas, inspiration and practical advice.

Should you find that it is proving too difficult to raise the money required, and you do decide to cancel, you can do so at any time. Please be aware that the deposit is non-refundable and there are cancellation fees from 150 days prior to departure.
