If you’re anything like us, the recent government announcement that international travel is beginning to open up again will have had you jumping for joy.

Whilst travel to our host destinations isn’t permitted quite yet, we’re looking forward to the day when we can once again give our volunteers an authentic and memorable experience in Ghana, Kenya or Zanzibar.

In the meantime, we’ve rounded up some of the best virtual travel experiences for Ghana, Kenya and Zanzibar that the internet has to offer, so that you can continue to explore the spectacular continent of Africa from the comfort of your own home! Read on to find out more…

Ghana

First up is the vibrant West African country of Ghana. During our trips, volunteers can explore Ghana’s varied history, stunning wildlife and breathtaking scenery on our weekend adventure activities.

On our Cape Coast Adventure Weekend, volunteers can learn about the dark history of the transatlantic slave trade as they tour Cape Coast Castle. While you can’t quite explore Cape Coast Castle in person yet, we’re bringing you the next best thing in this blog – a virtual tour.

Dobiison VR describe themselves as Ghana’s leading provider of interactive virtual tours and dynamic digital experiences. They’ve put together a 360 degree virtual tour of the castle, which you can enjoy from anywhere in the world!

Dobiison have also created a virtual tour of another highlight of an African Adventure to Ghana – Wli Falls. Enjoy panoramic views of this beautiful waterfall, and enjoy the soothing sounds of falling water.

Kenya

Aside from spending time at our partner projects, we consistently hear from our volunteers that their safari experience was the most unforgettable part of their trip to Kenya.

Thankfully, WildEarth, a South African broadcasting company, have now made enjoying a spectacular safari drive even easier with their live safaris. The company broadcast twice a day from national reserves in Kenya and South Africa, and you can even interact with their rangers as you watch live on YouTube!

The Mpala Research Centre, which is based near our partner projects in Kenya’s Great Rift Valley, has also made enjoying Kenya’s wildlife incredibly easy. The Centre’s live camera feed provides real-time footage of a watering hole in Kenya’s central highlands, where you can spot elephants, hippos, giraffes, zebras and many other animals stopping for a drink or a quick dip!

A safari drive in Kenya is a highlight of our trips!

Zanzibar

Finally, we’re heading a little further east (virtually!) to the idyllic island of Zanzibar.

If these grey UK skies have you missing the island sunshine of this east African archipelago, look no further than this virtual tour of Zanzibar City. Created by World Travel in 360, who are on a mission to create digital tours across the world using Google Street View, this amazing virtual tour lets you explore such sights as the Freddie Mercury museum, Prison Island and Stone Town by night.

Alternatively, you can recreate the walking tour of Stone Town, included with our Taste of Zanzibar Weekend, with this 30-minute video. Soak up the sounds, sights and atmosphere of the UNESCO World Heritage site without even leaving your house!

Volunteers can explore historic Stone Town on their trip to Zanzibar.

We can’t wait to be able to bring you these incredible experiences in real life, but for now, we hope you enjoyed your virtual tour of our host destinations! To find out more about the areas where we work, please click here, or to explore our adventure activities, click here.
